The County FA’s biggest cup competition is coming to, as they say, the business end of the season. The draw for the Area semi finals were announced on Thursday and are due to be played on the first Saturday in February, but not before there are four previous round ties to be sorted.

All being well they were resolved yesterday, but the ties picked out by the CCFA before those games were completed look like this:- Area Semi final East - Fowey United v Pelynt or North Petherwin, Saltash United or St Merryn v St Dominick. West - Illogan RBL v St Buryan, Stithians or Perranwell v Threemilestone or Helston Athletic .

Staying with the county’s Junior level football, it seems absolutely crazy at this time of the season, when the bad weather more than often kicks in and plays it part by clubs beginning to worry about facing fixture congestion, that there are clubs actually advertising for friendlies? Why I wonder?

Well some of it probably has to do with the new Trelawny League which came about with the merger of the Mining and Falmouth-Helston Leagues.

From the two leagues came a new league with 7 divisions, but the most teams in any of those seven is only 14, with the bottom one, Division 6, only having 10! Albeit the League drew up a mini league group competition for that division, and there are a few other cups to play for elsewhere in the league – but the general opinion, although in favour of the merge, it does seem that they got the numbers wrong. Not helped of course by clubs withdrawing as the season was about to begin.

It must be strange being a “playing” member of say Pendeen Rovers or St Just. The former only played one league game for the whole of December, while their neighbours in the far west, not helped by postponements, were even worse off with no league games at all throughout November and December!

Mind you when they returned to action last Saturday they went down 8-1 at home to Praze!

However at least Pendeen can say they have gone into the New Year with an undefeated league record. Mind you because they have only played seven games, they still find themselves below half way in Division 4 as the likes of leaders Wendron have played twice as many games.

So who else is unbeaten in the Trelawny up to yesterday at least? Congratulations to the following -

Goonhavern, currently top of the Premier Division; West Cornwall (Div 2), Falmouth Athletic DC (D3), Newlyn Non-Athletico (D5) and Four Lanes (D6).

In the JJ Jones Builders Duchy League only 3 sides are still to experience a league defeat – St Columb Major (D1), Biscovey (D2) and Padstow United (D3).

Amazingly at our Senior level football there are only two teams still unbeaten and they both hail from the Cornish Guardian East Cornwall Premier league. In fact one from each division and in each case they are the current league leaders.

In the Premier Division, Torpoint Athletic went into their match with Bodmin Town defending a 16 unbeaten match sequence.  While Liskeard Athletic started their match yesterday against Holsworthy on a mini run of four straight wins from their unbeaten 14 games.
